I think I’ve mentioned this already, but since reading Fun Home by Alison Bechdel, I’ve kind of been devouring anything that she’s written. Sadly the library closed before I could get more of this great comic strip, but hopefully I can find more soon.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this series, but it seemed like something I’d enjoy and I was right. There’s something so great about being able to read queer stories written by queer authors. Dykes To Watch Out For follows a group of lesbians around their every day lives. It shows us their struggles, their loves, deciding whether to raise children, going to protests. The characters have their joys and sorrows. They’re not perfect, they have their struggles and fights. Everything normal about queer lives was here and it was such a delight to read. It was like being able to read a story about my friends and I (though I identify as bisexual). Representation like this matters!
Bechdel is a fantastic writer, she knows how to show human beings for what they are. And I can’t wait to read more DtWOF in the future. These two collections were four and three star reads respectively. I highly recommend this comic series to you all.
