Top Ten Tuesday – Goodreads Choice Awards 2020

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly blog meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This is supposed to be a Halloween freebie and yes I’m also a day late, but better late than never because holy shit the Goodreads Choice Awards has already started! This year it feels like it will be even harder to get through the list, and of course I still haven’t finished with 2019’s. But I’m not pushing myself this year. But here are my initial thoughts, and the books that immediately jump out to me.

Best Fiction

At first glance I fell in love with both of these covers. I doubt I’ll be able to read them any time soon but fingers crossed that my library might have them.

Best Mystery & Thriller

Honestly at first glance none of these books really looked that interesting to me. *shrug*

Best Historical Fiction

Actually a lot of books in this category looked really good and I think this is the category that I am the most excited about.

Best Fantasy

Actually no I take it back. This is the most exciting category and for me it will come down to Sanderson and Kuang. At this moment, without having read either of these books, I think that Kuang is going to win my vote. But who knows!

Best Romance

You all probably know by now that romance is one of my least favorite genres, but since more and more LGBTQA romance books have been coming out I’ve been dipping my toes into it.

Best Science Fiction

Science Fiction is gradually going up in my interests, and this year the awards look like they have many good reads.

Best Horror

What I really look for in horror is less of jump scares (my brain can’t think of a better term right now) more stories that make me think about the horror that happens in life, as well as stories that make me think about people and the world and what makes people do bad things. These books seemed more along those lines than the others on the list.

Best Humor

This is actually one category that I’ve already voted on, despite not having read the book. For a couple of reasons. One being usually I hate all of the books in this category, I think humor is hard to read and I have a particular brand of humor that I enjoy, so honestly I’m not going to read much of the category. The other reason being, I really like Samantha Irby’s writing style so I’m pretty damn sure that I’m going to like her book best of all.

Best Nonfiction

This is another one of my favorite genres so I had a hard time picking out just a few books that I think I would really like. But I managed to narrow it down to three.

Best Memoir & Autobiography

If I could I would definitely just go to the library and grab all the books on this list, but COVID is continually making life sad. Here are my favorite covers.

History & Biography

I love all of the books that have been published recently by authors of color and I really need to write more.

Best Science & Technology

Wow this category is on fire this year!

Best Food & Cookbooks

Comfort food, vegan food and nourishing food. Yes, yes, yes to all of them.

Best Graphic Novel & Comics

Every year that goes by without a Saga volume nominee makes me sad. But here are some that make up for it just a little.

Best Poetry

Margaret Atwood writes poetry? Rupi Kaur came out with a new book? And Amanda Lovelace? Damn this is a good year for poetry.

Best Debut Novel

This category is my least favorite. That’s all I have to say.

Best Young Adult Fiction

I haven’t read any YA in way too fucking long and I just can’t wait to dive back into it.

Best Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction

Look at these books! Ugh I can’t wait to read them.

Best Middle Grade & Children’s

Middle grade (along with New Adult) is rapidly growing into a fantastic genre, and the more books that come out the more excited I am to see where the genre goes in the future.

Best Picture Books

This is the other category that I’ve already voted in. I was able to read a couple of books from it just today and I fell in love with this one.

And that’s all from me for now! Who else is voting in this year’s awards?
